Dr. Pravat kr. Mandal (M.Phil, Ph.D)
The college started its journey in December , 2010 and has already spread its petals to fragrance the lives of people of Kotshila where it is situated and its adjoining villages. The college at present provides BA Pass/Program and Honours degrees in Bengali, English, History, Geography, Political Science, Education and Physical Education . In the coming sessions it is our aspiration to offer more Honours and Pass courses as well.We hope that together we shall be able to take the college to such a position that it can revolutionize education scenario in rural Purulia. I am happy to share that most of the students of this institution are girls, which is really a positive sign for the expanses of higher education in purulia district. It is more appreciable that more than 95% students of our college are 1st generation learner.
The people of Kotshila town and the adjacent localities keenly wanted to have a college for the local students to study degree course at under graduate level. This initiative of common people took a concrete shape in the year 2010 and it was decided that a college would be established at a site of 15 bighas donated land near Kotshila Railway Station.
With necessary permission and affiliation from the West Bengal Council for Higher Education and the University of Burdwan, College was named as `Kotshila Mahavidyalaya’ formally started classes on 27th September 2010 as the premises of Kotshila Girls High School (H.S).We honestly express our sincere thanks to the school authority for extending their co-operation. After that our college was run in a rented house near the Jhalda-II Block Office. In March 2015, we have been shifted to our own building with a campus of area of 15 bighas, which is shaped with a natural beauty.
We are grateful to Sri Nepal Mahato Hon’ble M.L.A who took the initiative and a fund of Rs. One crore eleven lakh was sanctioned by the Paschimanchal Unnayan Parishad for the construction of the college building. We also thankful to Hon’ble MIC Sri Shantiram Mahato & Shri Shaktipada Mahato Hon’ble M.L.A. for the assistance to construct college building and 730 ft college boundary.
College started its journey with an Ad-hoc Governing Body. Headed by the President Sri Nakul Mahato and Govt. nominee Sri Nepal Mahato M.L.A, Dr. Nilima Sinha , Ex.Principal of Nistarini College,Purulia is acting as Principal/Teacher-in–charge of the college from 22nd December 2010.
On 6th January 2011 the college was affiliated to the Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University. The community is looking forward for a better tomorrow. The Higher Education department, Govt. of West Bengal, continues to take necessary steps for the development of the college in the District of Purulia for promoting Higher Education in this remote area. The new Ad-hoc Governing Body has been formed on 25.02.2014 headed by the President Sri Sunil Kumar, Kotshila Mahavidyalaya will be a new mile stone for the entire region.
Dr. Nilima Sinha has been rendering her voluntary service as the acting Principal of the college since its inception. The current state of the college from its very humble beginning would not have been possible without her relentless effort.
A dream to drive education into a community that is known for its back-ward classes and thus improve the living standard of people in the community is what kept her actively engaged even after six years of retirement as Principal of Nistarini College, Purulia.
After the formation of a fully functional college, Dr.Pravat Kumar Mandal rendered his services to the college as a dedicated Principal on 28th August, 2018. He is the first permanent Principal of this college and has proven his worth as a dynamic individual who sincerely intends to raise the status of the backward classes in the area. He has also enhanced the beauty of the structure like creating cycle stands for the students, a girls’ common room and has also added a length of 500 metres to the boundary wall already surrounding the college and many other facilities during his tenure. He is striving to mould the students of this new generation into educated, rational and analytical individuals.
